The resort of Skanes with its seemingly endless sandy beach has been welcoming British holidaymakers for many years. As a superb of its more famous neighbour Monastir, Skanes is ideal for holidaymakers seeking a relaxing beach holiday. Monastir is privileged as the birth-place of former President Bourguiba. Located near the site of the Roman town Ruspina, it is typically Arab in atmosphere and surrounded by a wall and battlements with small square towers. The Ribat may look familiar as it has been used in the making of several films, including Monty Python's Life of Brian and the Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as the TV series Jesus of Nazareth. A modern marina and a very different looking Medina compliment the list of amenities.
Inside the Ribat you will find a Museum of Islamic Arts housing superb manuscripts, exquisite ancient textiles, glassware, pottery and miniatures from different periods. The Bourguiba Mausoleum is an amazing building, a twin-towered gold-domed memorial tribute to the former president completed in the 1970's. The contemporary Bourguiba Mosque, built in traditional style in 1963, is a sophisticated building and a fine example of modern architecture.
